Tours

Two extra curricular tours are being offered in conjunction with the Symposium. Participants may choose to join in either or both tours.

Springs Preserve & Hydrogen Filling Station - August 22, 2008

Green isn't just a color anymore, it's now a way of life. The Springs Preserve is an example of sustainable living in practice as well as a resource for those interested in greening their lifestyle. The Springs Preserve is a 180-acre non-gaming cultural and historical attraction designed to commemorate Las Vegas' dynamic history and to provide a vision for a sustainable future.

Desert Living Center

The Preserve features an array of green architecture, with buildings designed to achieve certification from the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program. The green building techniques featured at the Springs Preserve save money and natural resources. They also raise awareness of the newest breakthroughs in sustainable design.

Please register to take part in the "Sustainability Tour" of this facility, which highlights the sustainable technologies that make the Springs Preserve the largest Platinum LEED Rated commercial building in the Southwest.

****Just Added!****

The Renewable Hydrogen Filling Station – a joint project by UNLV and the Las Vegas Valley Water District – will host a short stop on the tour just after the Springs Preserve.

The station is one of only a few solar-powered hydrogen filling stations in the nation and combines research and expertise from UNLV's Center for Energy Research, the Las Vegas Valley Water District, and community partners. Hydrogen created at the facility fuels converted Water District vehicles for use primarily at the Las Vegas Springs Preserve.

TIME: Tour bus to depart from the UNLV campus, Stan Fulton/IGI building approximately 8:30 AM and will return approximately 12-noon

FEE: $25/person

The plant will generate more than 30 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean electricity annually and supply approximately 25% of the total power used at the base, where 12,000 people live and work. The system covers 140 acres of land at the western edge of the Nellis AFB and is comprised of 72,000 solar panels using the SunPower Tracker technology.

The system is a joint project of the U.S. Air Force; MMA Renewable Ventures, LLC; SunPower Corporation; and Nevada Power Company.
